WALKING SCORE: 7

Berkeley has great walkability thanks to the boutiques, restaurants, breweries, galleries, salons, and more off of Tennyson Street. The neighborhood’s warm energy comes from the pedestrain culture, with people always out and about. Tennyson street is also part of the First Friday Art Walks that take place around Denver every month. Another venue unique to Berkeley is the Old Elitch Theater at 38th & Tennyson. They host a variety of events throughout the year. Anything from Pet Adoptions, a Christmas Tree farm during the holidays, movie nights in the summer, open mic nights and other stage performances!  

TRANPORTATION SCORE: 5

Though bus stops are sparse, Berkeley offers quick I-70 freeway access. 38th Ave is the southern boundary and allows for quick access to downtown, Coors field or I-25.  You can be west-bound toward the mountains in no time or Downtown in 10 minutes in a car.

Tennyson Street is home to the Denver Cat Company, one of the first cat cafes in the country! It has coffee, teas, wifi, cat-themed gifts, and even adoptable cats who are ready to go home with any customers who complete their adoption process. Fun fact: the Denver Cat Company is responsible for over 100 cat adoptions each year. Plus, you’ll find more than a Cat Cafe on Tennyson! You won’t find too many Denver neighborhoods with both a plethora of local shops and a good amount of chain convenience but Berkeley is one of those rare spots that has it all. Tennyson street hosts a Natural Grocers and Sprouts and Walmart are closeby as well.

PARKING: HIT AND MISS

Parking near Tennyson can be difficult, though neighborhood street spots are readily available. Give yourself a bit of extra time to park if you’re visiting on a festival or Art Walk day.

THE HISTORY OF BERKELEY

Berkeley (38th and Tennyson) was home to the original Elitch Gardens from 1890, until the amusement park moved to downtown Denver in 1994. The original Elitch Garden was more than just an amusement park, it was also the first zoo west of Chicago, Denver's first Botanic Garden, and the site of Denver's first motion picture theatre. Berkeley is currently home to a historic theatre, the Oriental Theatre, which opened in 1927 and hosts live music, comedy, film, etc. The theatre is registered with the National Register of Historic Places.
