Buying a new home is a daunting task, which is why it is so important to find a great real estate agent to assist you through the process. Here are the four questions to ask yourself in order to choose a great real estate agent!
Do they have outstanding communication skills?
A great real estate agent will guide you through the process of buying a new home. Maybe it’s your first time buying and you don’t really know what to expect, or maybe there are new circumstances that you need assistance with. While they may not be available 24/7, they should be communicating with you effectively so that you know what is going on. Nothing is more frustrating than being left in the dark!
Are they inquisitive?
While an agent may have great intuition and experience, this will only get them so far. A great agent is also inquisitive and wants to hear all about your wants and needs.
What kind of neighborhood best suits you?
What kind of restaurants/shopping/activities do you enjoy?
Is this your first time purchasing a home?
An inquisitive agent shows interest in you and puts a focus on understanding exactly what you and your family are looking for. Answering the basic questions of how many bedrooms and baths you need is the bare minimum. In order to find the perfect house for you, much more information is needed. If you are moving to a new area, or even out-of-state, this is especially true. The more questions and information that is gathered, the more likely it is that the agent will show you houses that you will LOVE!
Do they have experience / experience in this particular area?
While there are many fantastic new agents who have a knack for what they do, experience is always a huge plus. A question to consider is how much experience the agent has in the area you are looking to buy. Maybe they have lived there for a long time and know the area, or maybe they have sold many houses there. Either way, it is extremely helpful when your agent can guide you through the area and help you decide what neighborhood is best for you.
Are they emotionally intelligent?
Emotional intelligence is “the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.” This characteristic is especially important in an agent. Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do, and sometimes there are speed bumps in the road when trying to buy a new home. A great real estate agent is able to guide you through this time in your life and navigate your emotions to get the job done!
It's also important to understand the difference between a real estate agent and a realtor®. Yes, there is a difference! Both real estate agents and realtors® have professional licenses to buy, sell, and rent real estate. However, in order to be a realtor®, one must join the National Association of Realtors®. This means that realtors® are held to a higher standard than real estate agents.
Asking yourself these four questions will help you choose a talented and knowledgeable real estate agent. Buying a house is a lot of work to do on your own, so don’t be afraid to call a professional and see what they have to offer!
